AN ADVOCATE FOR ALL
I'm Diane Couri and Decatur, Illinois has been my hometown since birth. I come from strong family values where my parents raised me to work hard, remain grounded in morals, and respect all those I meet. I am a graduate of Holy Family Catholic School and St. Teresa High School. Throughout my journey, I pursued higher education, earning a B.S. in Business Management from Millikin University. I then set my sights on the legal profession and achieved my J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan. At the end of law school, I was fortunate enough to be a 711 intern at the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office. During my internship, I discovered my passion for seeking justice as a prosecutor.
Once I became a licensed attorney, I started my professional career in the private sector, where I represented banks and landlords, handling collection matters. I then accepted a position at the Macon County State's Attorney's Office as an Assistant State’s Attorney and prosecuted cases for nearly four years.
During this time, I prosecuted virtually every type of case, ranging from traffic violations, DUIs, and felony offenses to the most serious charges like First Degree Murder and Attempt First Degree Murder. The majority of my time as an Assistant State’s Attorney was devoted to the prosecution of sex crimes where I worked to obtain justice for child victims of sex offenses and as supervisor of the DUI and Traffic Unit. I pursued experience in the private sector in 2017 and opened my own office in 2020. Working in the private sector has given me the opportunity to see all aspects of a case; the strengths of a case, the weaknesses of a case, and a better intuition of what theory the defense might utilize. In turn, this experience has provided priceless value as it has made me a more well-rounded attorney.
More important than my professional career, I am blessed to be married to my husband Tom and to be the mother to our four amazing children; Anthony, Maggie, Jacqueline, and Simon. I am a youth group leader at Holy Family Catholic Church where I also serve on the Holy Family Finance Council. I am also a board member on the Macon County Mental Health Board.
Why am I running for Macon County State’s Attorney? To better my community. I want to make my community safer for my friends, siblings, nieces and nephews, and for my own children. I chose to come back to Decatur and start my family here. I am committed to using my experience, work ethic, and innovative ideas to seek justice and effectively prosecute criminal cases in Macon County.
I am passionate about my community and look forward to faithfully serving Macon County as the next State’s Attorney.
